Join us for the Opening Reception for “Altered Lit: An Exhibit About Censorship.” This exhibit highlights issues of censorship in American literature. Meet the artists, and enjoy light refreshments during this reception.
On display will be a series of interactive books that have been artistically altered from their original form to creatively express a topic related to censorship in literature. The books were created by doctoral students at University of West Florida.
Books are historically and currently a site of censorship within our society. Works of literature have been censored, banned and challenged for reasons such as racial themes, sexual content, inappropriate language, and references to the occult, all of which are addressed in this altered books exhibit. This exhibit manifests the power within literary culture to resist curtailments of our most basic and cherished freedom, the freedom of speech guaranteed in the First Amendment.
These unique creations will be on display at Open Books through the month of January.
