OPEN BOOKS PROVIDES INMATES WITH FREE BOOKS

February 2, 2015, Alisa Festagallo,The Voyager Staff Writer

A bookstore in Pensacola, operated by volunteers, is taking on the wants of inmates in Florida prisons by providing them with free books at their request.

Open Books is a bookstore located on Guillemard Street. Open Books is filled with a variety of books that funds the Prison Book Project. The Prison Book Project is a project where volunteers of Open Books come together to send out free books to prisons in Florida. The volunteers send an average of three books per package and have sent more than 40,000 books since it opened.

After the Subterranean Prison Book Project, which started sending books to inmates in 2000, closed in 2007, volunteers opened Open Books a few months later.

Inmates receive books by sending in letters of the subjects of books they would like to receive, and then volunteers match books to their requests and get together on a specific day of the week to package up the books.
